Giver on windows

ankitj @ 2:18 pm

This is a temporary page for the windows port of Giver. I’ve submitted the patches to the mailing list for review/commit. Till then please try out the binaries provided here on windows.

Requirements:
1. .NET 2.0 runtime is required for this
2. Gtk-sharp
3. Bonjour from http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/windows/bonjourforwindows.html

Download and unzip this, and just run Giver.exe

You can either email me (radical at gmail) your feedback on this or post it on the mailing list

Is it working fully between windows and linux then? Thank you very much for having gone through the trouble of porting this.~

  3. ankitj says:

Joe, Yeah, it is working fine b/w windows and linux.

It crashes for me immediately on Vista. I didn’t explicity install Bonjour but I understand that to be installed as part of iTunes (and did see a version installed). .NET Framework is up to date and I installed the gtk-sharp MSI specified.

For crashes on windows, could you please give details of the crash, stacktrace if you are getting that, and/or could you please see if you can find a file named .giver.log in the “Documents And Settings\” folder and paste its contents here?

  9. ankitj says:

Err, i meant, look for .giver.log in your “My Documents” folder.

    Hey Folks,
you can do the same with pidgin.
Just make an Bonjour Account with Pidgin and download the apple bonjour software.
Works the same and you dont have to install another programm.
Because everyone uses Pidgin, right ;)

  11. Juan Chotacorta says:

No, not everybody uses pidgin. I do, but not everybody does.

Under Vista the error log says the following:
10.09.2009 22:03:02 [Debug]: PhotoService static constructor called
10.09.2009 22:03:02 [Debug]: New GiverService was created
10.09.2009 22:03:02 [Debug]: Starting listener on port 49781
10.09.2009 22:03:02 [Debug]: Error starting a http listener on port 49781 : Zugriff verweigert
10.09.2009 22:03:02 [Debug]: Error starting GiverService: Unable to bind to any port. See .giver.log file in your home directory for details.

Just a hint for you: “Zugriff verweigert” means “Access denied”.
With the firewall off i get the same error.

Would be great if you could fix this.
I use giver for quite a long time now sharing files on my linux machines. Would be great if the windows system could participate as well …

    Cheers
